About

In 1946, Zhou Enlai, the first premier of the People’s Republic of China, briefly lived in this former French Concession villa. The home is located just a few doors down from Sun Yat-sen’s former residence.

Considered an influential revolutionary, Enlai worked closely with Mao Zedong as the first Premier of the People’s Republic of China until his death. Enlai was beloved by most accounts.

Enlai spent his time at the residence giving press conferences and even received the United States Presidential Envoy Marshall at the home. At that time, he was also dodging the Kuomintang agents who spied on him from just across the street.

The four-story home is filled with displays that include a reception room, the dining room, and comrade dorms. All are furnished according to the period.

Visitors are encouraged to spend some time in the garden, a lovely shady space with a fountain and trees said to have been planted by Enlai and his wife. The annex building, which is located at No. 71, Sinan Road and is home to a historical photo exhibition hall. The house was listed as a municipal relic in 1959 and became a memorial in 1979.
